It took awhile to get to this stage but the outline has finally been completed and the first ‘varnish’ layer applied.

As you can see, the pencil outlines are quite dark and bold at present, this is because each layer I do, the paint will be quite transparent and I will apply quite a few layers of paint until I get the richness of colour and values that I need. So during this process, the longer I can see the outlined drawing, the better.

The next stage is to begin the underpainting. This will involve deciding what values of blocked colour to use. This finished underpainting will be very rough, but is essential as a foundation for the whole piece.
